If you are looking to install a pool, cement and vinyl liner pools are the two most common pools. There is pros and cons to each type of pool whether it is customization or durability. First lets discuss the price of the two. Typically, a vinyl pool is much cheaper then a concrete pool. In New Jersey, a typical 18X36 vinyl pool would run about $35,000-$40,000. A similar concrete pool would be roughly double the price because of all the concrete and rebar that is needed to build the pool.
The second topic people usually have between these two pools is durability. Overall, a concrete pool is more durable then a vinyl pool. This is due to the fact that vinyl pools are much easier to damage. For example a vinyl pool's liner must be replaced every 10 to 12 years. If it is not replaced, holes can be made in the liner which can result to structure damage from the frame from water erosion over time. Furthermore, with a concrete pool all you really need is acid wash every 10-15 years to keep the integrity of the concrete.
Lastly, the time it takes to construct these pools are massively different. A vinyl pool can easily take 4-8 weeks depending on how long it takes to get permits to build. But a concrete pool can take months and even a whole year because there is much more skill, craftsmanship, and permits to construct.
In conclusion, here would be my opinion on these two pools. If you are on a somewhat strict budget, a vinyl pool is the way to go. But if you can play with your money, concrete is your move. Concrete looks better to the eye and can really elevate your backyard to a more adult feel.
