How to become a Lifeguard in New Jersey.

In order to become a lifeguard in the state of New Jersey, an individual must pas certain tests and prerequisites.


There are 4 prerequisites a individual must do in order to be considered a candidate for lifeguarding. The first one is that the person applying for the lifeguard course must be at least 15 years old. Next the individual must be able to complete 300 yard continuous swim using a breast stroke or front crawl method of swimming. Additionally, the applicant must be able to tread water for 2 minutes with using only their hands and feet. The last prerequisite is to dive 10 ft, retrieve a ten pound object and return it to the surface.


After these prerequisites are completed, the candidate will be accepted into lifeguard school. The course goes over an array of topics such as CPR/AED, rescue skills, victim analysis, and more. Furthermore this course will take 26.5 hours to complete. Once the course is completed, you will have your lifeguard license for 2 years. Every 2 years you must pass the prerequisite test to obtain the license again.
