Factors to Consider when Building a Pool

Updated: Nov 10, 2021

When pool construction starts, there can be many factors that can delay or make the process more expensive. But with the correct knowledge, this process can be stress free and cost efficient.

The first thing to consider when building a pool would be location. If your home is located near the water, you may want to consider the possibility of spending more money on stone to prevent a huge problem. Underground there is water tables, and over time these water tables can shift. The problem that can happen is there is no ground water when you first dig your pool. But then 5 years later, the water table starts to shift, which then can damage the structural integrity of the pool frame.

Next, is to consider the layout of your backyard. A couple of questions to ask are "can the machines fit back here without damaging anything?", "is my fence high enough?" and "am I willing to renovate my backyard?". These are the biggest problems that people run into and don't consider. An example that can fulfill all thee questions is that a family signs a contract to construct a pool. But they have a 2 foot fence around their whole yard with no major openings. In order to get the machines in the back, the fence must be destroyed along with backyard because of the location of the pool. The homeowners did not take those expenses into account because when there is a pool in NJ the surrounding fence must be at least 3 ft high.

Finally, one of the last things to consider would be does this pool add value to the house? In Monmouth County, pools usually do not add value because the beach is relatively close to the area. So if this pool is an investment to add value to your house, do research before because in some cases these pools can also devalue a property because they can be seen as a money pit.
